Cavalluzzo represented the United Steelworkers Local 2251 (“USW Local 2251”) in the comprehensive restructuring of Essar Steel Algoma Inc. which emerged from CCAA proceedings as Algoma Steel Inc. in 2018.

The deal was recently recognized by Lexpert as one of the “Top 10” deals of 2018 and involved the negotiation and implementation of revised collective agreements and pension relief, which were achieved through legislative and regulatory mechanisms. The resolution of this insolvency, and the emergence of Algoma Steel Inc. from the CCAA as a going concern, were critical to the protection of thousands of jobs and to the preservation one of Ontario’s last remaining steel producers.

USW Local 2251 was represented by Tracey Henry, Michael Wright, Amanda Darrach, and Alex St. John.
